Meet Our Graduate Fellows
While the HCNY Foundation started with a focus on providing scholarship funds for Harvard College students, it has since expanded its activities.
Assistant Commissioner Jon Murad
2012 Fellow
In December, 2014, Jon was appointed Assistant Commissioner, Strategic Communications by Police Commissioner William Bratton. In this capacity, Jon commands the NYPD’s executive communications team, and also works on policy development, strategy, and messaging.
Jon previously served as a patrol supervisor in Washington Heights, as a detective in a special projects team, and as a police officer and field intelligence officer in Bronx housing projects. He has been part of teams that have overseen a myriad of projects, including creating an unprecedented international police-mentoring program that deploys active-duty NYPD officers to Haiti, researching data-intensive performance studies, developing the NYPD’s counter-terrorism capabilities, enhancing its cybersecurity protocols, and investigating incidents ranging from officer-involved shootings to the euthanasia of retired police horses.
Jon is a graduate of Harvard College (’95) and entered the Harvard Kennedy School as a Foundation Fellow in 2012. He was honored to deliver the Graduate Oration at Harvard University’s 362nd Commencement in 2013. He lives in the Bronx with his wife, Vonnie (College ’94), and children, MacArthur and Cady Elizabeth.
